ABBOTSBURY Abbotsbury Railway 9 Nov 1885 3 Mar 1906 This shed was located to the east of Abbotsbury station to the south of the line. It was a stone built 1 track straight dead-ended shed with a gable style slated roof. There was a stone built water tower and a coaling stage at the entrance to the shed. The shed was closed soon after the line was absorbed by the GWR 1896 however, it was not recorded as out of use until 1906.The shed was partially demolished but some of the walls remained standing in 1992. SY58498530 
ABERAVON Rhondda & Swansea Bay Railway Nov 1885 20 Nov 1922 This shed was located at the north end of Aberavon station in the fork of the Maesteg and Duffryn lines. It was originally a timber walls 2 track straight through shed with a gable style pitched slate roof. Facilities included a coal stage and a water tank. In 1889, a stone built 2 track straight through shed with a northlight saw-tooth pattern slate roof was added behind the timber shed. Between 1906 and 1921, the timber shed was demolished, the coal plant improved and a crane added. In the same period, a carriage shed built in 1887, covering the three roads to the side of the stone shed was demolished, and the shed yard altered.  SS76739034 
ABERAYRON Lampeter, Aberayron & New Quay Light Railway 10 Apr 1911 30 Apr 1962 This shed was located south of Aberayron station on the east side of the line. It was a timber built 1 track straight dead-ended shed. The building was destroyed by fire at some time during 1925. Facilities included a coal stage. It was replaced in 1926 by a corrugated iron 1 track straight dead-ended shed with a gable style pitched slate roof which had previously been in use at WREXHAM CENTRALSN46166213

ABERBEEG Monmouthshire Railway & Canal Company 1858   Stone walls with gable style stone roof. Replaced by Churchward standard four road depot several chains southwards. SO21000110 
ABERCYNON Taff Vale Railway 1853   A corrugated iron 2 track straight dead ended shed. Still standing, in use as a foundry (1987). Unaltered despite large increase in allocation during shed life. Built originally to house the pilot at the foot of main incline and Aberdare branch engine. Station originally named Aberdare Junction. Demolished, new shed built on site. ST08259475 
ABERCYNON Great Western Railway   2 Nov 1964 A corrugated iron 2 track straight dead ended shed. Still standing, in use as a foundry (1987). ST08259475 
ABERDARE Mawddwy Railway 1846   Timber with gable style slated roof. Two sheds were sited either side of the main line immediately west of the level crossing near the town centre for stabling the two locos owned by the Company. The 0-6-0 goods engine Aberaman was transferred to the TV shed at Cardiff docks in 1847. The other engine 4-2-0 Columbia (American built) was transferred to Aberdare Junction (see Abercynon) in 1853 and by this time both sheds were in such a bad state of repair they were pulled down. SO00240320 
ABERDARE Taff Vale Railway 1865   Stone built with gable style slate roof. Due to the narrowness of the site, covered area was divided into two separate sheds. These were constructed following a decision to diagram certain coal workings from heads of valley and not all from Cardiff as previously. SO00240320

ABERDARE Vale of Neath Joint Railway 1864   Unknown, but likely to be timber with slate roof. Built when GWR reached Aberdare, thirteen years after the arrival of the Vale of Neath Railway. The shed was mixed guage, GWR being the "narrow" A new standard gauge shed was built close by in 1867 and from then on only broad gauge engines used the shed until the withdrawl of broad gauge in 1872. SO00240320 
ABERDARE (JOINT MR) Great Western Railway 1867   Stone walls and gabled slate roof to each shed. All shed roads had full length pits except No 1 road. Originally erected as a four road shed to cope with increased coal traffic, it was doubled in size in 1874 as trade was so rapid. Replaced by Churchward roundhouse depot. SO00240320

ABERYSTWYTH Cambrian Railway Jun 1864 10 Apr 1965 Brick walls with gabled slate roof.A brick built 2 track straight through road shed. Converted for use as the V of R narrow gauge engine shed and still in used in that capacity (1989). Originally Cambrian Railways property, the depot became joint owned with the GWR, possibly in 1906 when the GWR took over the Manchester & Midland Railway which had been joint with the Cambrian since 1867. The line nearest the coal plant was reserved for GWR engines and no doubt for M & MR previously. The shed building appears to have been extended at some time, possibly 1867. The original length being 100 ft. The turntable was replaced by one of 55 ft diameter, and this was resited in 1925 when the GWR added their own standard pattern coaling stage in place of the coaling platform. The depot did not close in 1938 but underwent major rebuilding with the shed being demolished and a brick building being constructed on the same site. SN58738131

ALFORD Alford & Sutton Tramway 2 Apr 1884 6 Dec 1889 At the north end of Alford station on the west side of Station Road was a 2ft 6in gauge, brick built 2 track straight dead-ended shed with a gable style slate roof. Facilities included a repair shop, which was located in the adjacent works. After closure, it passed into private use and remained standing as a garage until 1971. TF44557562

ALNMOUTH North Eastern Railway 1875 19 Jun 1966 The shed was located on the west side of Alnmouth station. Formerly known as Bilton Junction up to 1892, it was a brick built 2 track straight dead-ended shed with a gable style slate roof. It was extended in 1887. Site facilities included a coaling stage, a water tank and a turntable. Demolished following closure. NU23071104

ALSTON Newcastle & Carlisle Railway 17 Nov 1852 27 Nov 1959 This shed was located on the west side of Alston station. It was a stone built 1 track straight through shed with a gabled slate roof. One wall of the shed also supported the station canopy and the opposite wall was shared by the goods shed. Facilities included a water column and a turntable was located at the end of the platform doubling as a loco release. Demolished 1970. NY71654673

ANNESLEY Manchester, Sheffield & Lincolnshire Railway 1898 3 Jan 1966 This shed was located south of Hollinwell and Annesley station on the west side of the GCR line. It was a brick built 6 track straight dead ended shed with a northlight pattern slate roof and a brick screeen. Facilities included a turntable, coaling stage and water tank. It was demolished in 1966. The site is buried under a slag heap (1990). SK52505290

ASHBURTON Buckfastleigh, Totnes & South Devon Railway 1 May 1872 Nov 1958 The shed is located at the south end of Ashburton station on the east side of the line. It is a stone built 1 track straight dead-ended shed with a gable style slate roof. There was a coaling stage and water tower on the approach to the shed. After closure, it was sold for private use, is still standing and in use as a store. SX75666957 
ASHFORD Southern Railway   1963 A concrete built 10 track straight dead ended shed. Following closure it was used as a home for the South Eastern Steam Centre, a preservation group, but since they vacated the whole shed is now in a derelict condition, with all lines lifted and the shed yard is now a wilderness. The site was in use for motor vehicle storage 1988. Demolished 1989. TR02154163

ASHTON Teign Valley Railway 9 Oct 1882 1908 The shed was located at the south end of Ashton station on the east side of the line. It was a brick built 1 track straight through shed with a timber trussed, gable style slate roof. A water tower and coaling stage were located at the southern end of the building. The Ashton - Exeter City Basin section of line was opened in 1903 providing another route from Newton Abbot to Exeter and this probably resulted in the closure. However, it continued to be used after closure for storage. Despite being listed as out of use in October 1912, it was in use again until after the GWR took possession in 1923. It was then listed as not in use in October 1924. The building was still standing in 1958. SX84458398

AVONMOUTH Midland Railway 1890   Timber walls and gable style slated roof. There could possibly have been an earlier shed erected by Bristol Port & Pier Railway in 1865. It may have disappeared in 1901 to make way for dock extensions. Early drawings do not reveal a shed.
